Alla città non manca nulla di ciò che rende completa una piccola città cretese:
negozi, supermercati, ufficio postale, banche, scuole elementari e medie, chiese, parrucchiere, farmacia, un centro medico ed anche una sede vescovile.

Lo stile di vita è particolarmente rilassato nel centro città.
Una fontana in stile veneziano, con Il nome Spili deriva da una caverna nelle vicine montagne (in greco "spileon" = caverna) che pur non essendo promossa dai circuiti turistici può essere agevolmente esplorata da soli. |

Gli immediati dintorni sono eccellenti per gli escursionisti.
Si trovano flora selvatica e orchidee e non è raro avvistare aquile e avvoltoi.
Spili è pure un'ottima base per escursioni più impegnative. In direzione est, via Gherakari, si accede alla Valle di Amari, dall'ineguagliabile paesaggio ai piedi del massiccio dell'Ida, con la caverna di Antonios vicino Patsos e gli scavi Minoici di Thronos e Apodoulou. |

A Nord, la città di Rethymnon offer un vivace turismo e una spiaggia lunga Ad Ovest, passando per Frati, si attraversa la gola di Kourtaliotiko in direzione della costa meridionale. La spiaggia orlat di palme di Preveli si trova qui, come pure I villaggi di Plakias |

Non mancate di visitare la piccolo città portuale Hora Sfakion e il soprastante villaggio abbandonato di Aradena.
In direzione sud si incontrano le spiaggie di Kerames e Akoumia, con la sabbia finissima ma non ancora affollate e la cittadina di Aghia Galini con il pittoresco porto. I siti archeologici di Festos (Phaistos) e Gortys non sono lontani e le caverne presso la spiaggia di Matala meritano pure una visita. |
